NIPISSING UNIVERSITY

Mathematics
Subject to final budgetary approval, the department of Computer Science 
and Mathematics, Nipissing University, invites applications for a 
tenure-track position in Mathematics, beginning July 1, 2002.  The
successful candidate will have a completed PhD and a demonstrated ability 
for excellence in both research and undergraduate teaching.  Rank and 
salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The 
current salary range for Assistant Professor is $51,396 - $73,198.

The department is committed to active scholarship in mathematics, and, 
while preference will be given to candidates with a research specialty in 
Geometric Topology and/or Dimension Theory (or a field closely related to 
these), strong candidates in other areas will also be considered.

The department is currently revising and expanding its BA and BSc 
mathematics programs.  The successful candidate will be expected to teach 
a variety of undergraduate mathematics courses, and to contribute to the 
department in other ways, which may include the supervision of senior 
undergraduate research projects.  Strong computing skills, or a keen 
interest in the use of computer technology in theoretical or applied 
mathematics, will be considered an asset.

Nipissing University is located in a beautiful natural setting on an 
escarpment overlooking Lake Nipissing in North Bay.  The city, which is 
located 3.5 hours from Toronto has a population of 60,000 and is a major

Announcement: Postdoctoral Positions

The Mathematics Department at the University of Western Ontario has
two postdoctoral positions available in the areas of homotopy theory
and mathematical physics.  The appointments are for one or two years,
beginning roughly July 1, 2002.  The positions carry a reduced teaching
load of two half-courses per year, in addition to research.  The salary
will be $38,000 CDN per year, plus a tax free research fund of $1,500.
The cost of living in London is quite low.

Successful candidates will have completed a Ph.D. degree in the past
two years, and have active research programs in homotopy theory or
mathematical physics which overlap with research programs of our
faculty.  For the homotopy theory position, there are tentative plans
for an emphasis semester in homotopy theory during the Fall of 2003
which the candidate could participate in.  For the mathematical
physics position, there is an opportunity for interaction with the
Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo.

invites applications for an Academic Assistant position, 
10-month term beginning 2001, August 1, subject to budgetary approval.
The position is a leave position, but could be extended.

Applicants should have at least a Bachelor's degree in mathematics or
statistics, but a Master's degree or higher is preferred.  
Teaching experience in mathematics and statistics is 
highly desirable.  Some computer science experience is an asset.

Responsibilities include the preparation, supervision and offering of
tutorial instruction associated with courses given by the department,

LECTURER IN MATHEMATICS

VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION IN MATHEMATICS

The Mathematics Department is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor
for a one year position to begin August 20, 2000. The position
requires a commitment to excellence in teaching undergraduate
mathematics to an increasingly diverse student body, to
mathematical research, and to generally encouraging student and
community involvement in mathematics. Preference will be given to
strong applicants in the areas of group theory, ring theory and

mathematics (12 hours per week) and research activity.

Ben Gurion university will offer post doctoral
scholarships for one year, renewable for a second
year. The positions are research positions and
involve no teaching. The funding covers 12 months of
stay and 1 back-and forth flight ticket. The support
is about $15,000 a year.

Visiting Position in Nonlinear Systems, Cornell


Cornell University seeks a visiting scholar to participate in an
interdisciplinary graduate training program in Nonlinear Systems,
funded by an IGERT grant from the National Science Foundation. (See the

The visiting position is for the Spring semester of 2000, and includes
compensation of $25,000.  It may be possible to arrange for additional

expected to interact (and perhaps collaborate) with the students and

	Applications are invited for two full-time tenure-track positions,
subject to final budgetary approval, at the Assistant Professor level,
commencing July 1, 2000, or as soon as possible thereafter.  Minimum
qualifications are a Ph.D. in mathematics, evidence of strong research
potential, and a strong commitment to teaching at the post-secondary
level.  The area of specialization of primary interest is functional
analysis.  Other fields of interest are partial differential equations and
current areas of geometry.  However, a truly outstanding candidate in any
area will be considered.  Duties will include undergraduate and graduate
teaching and supervision, research, and service-related activities.  The
salary range for the position is $42,524 to $65,040.

	The Department of Mathematics has 29 tenured or tenure-track
faculty members, together with several Instructors and sessional
lecturers, and offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs
in both pure and applied areas.  Fifteen graduate students are currently
enrolled in the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs.  The University of Manitoba is
home to the Institute of Industrial Mathematical Sciences, which actively
promotes links between faculty members and industry, and sponsors
international conferences in a variety of mathematical disciplines.  The
Department of Mathematics is also home to the technical editing facilities
of the Canadian Mathematical Society.

	Winnipeg is a city of about 650,000 that has a great deal to

TWO LECTURESHIPS IN PURE MATHEMATICS

Applications are invited for two permanent Lectureships in the
Department of Pure Mathematics, tenable from 1 January, 2000

The Department (one of three departments:  Pure Mathematics,
Applied Mathematics and Statistics, constituting the School of
Mathematics at Leeds) was rated 5 in the last UK Research
Assessment Exercise, and maintains strong research groups in
Algebra, Analysis, Differential Geometry and Mathematical Logic.
The successful  candidates will have proven research records in
one of these areas and will contribute to the high quality
research and teaching of the School. For one of the appointments
preference may be given to candidates with interests in
Noncommutative Algebra. The posts are part of a major development
which aims to enhance the School's excellent reputation in research
and teaching: in the recent QAA subject review it was awarded 22
points.
