Set theory and its neighbours, 10
22nd November
Dear Colleague
This message is to give initial information about the fourteenth one-day
meeting in the series "Set theory and its neighbours", which will take
place on Wednesday 22nd NOVEMBER 2006 at the Department of Mathematics,
University College London, which is situated at 25 Gordon Street, London
WC1H 0AH.
The first talk will be at 1pm. The last talk should finish by 6pm.
The meeting will start at 12noon, by which time those wishing to lunch
together should meet in room 606 of the Department of Mathematics.
The speakers at the meeting will be:
Riccardo Camerlo (Turin)
Greg Piper (tbc)
Shingo Saito (University College London)
Philip Welch (Bristol)
More information, including titles, will be available as we confirm it via
the meetings' web-page:
http://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ucahcjm/stn.html
As ever, we hope to keep the meeting fairly relaxed, allowing plenty of
opportunity for informal discussion. We welcome and encourage anyone to
participate. You are very welcome simply to turn up on the day if you make
a late decision. And we hope as many attendees as possible will be able to
join us for informal discussions at the end of the talks section of the
meeting.
Please do tell anyone about the meeting who you think may be interested in
it. And let us know if you would like to speak or have ideas for speakers
at future meetings.
We are very grateful to the LMS for partially funding the meeting and to
University College for allowing us to use 25 Gordon Square as a venue.
(The nearest tube stations to 25 Gordon Square are Euston and Euston
Square (each 2 mins walk), but it is also only a short walk from Warren
Street stations.)
Best wishes,
Charles

January 8-13, 2007
http://www.math.ohio-state.edu/~jlafont/MoreliaConf.html
This conference will bring together mathematicians who use geometric
methods to study topological problems and mathematicians who use
topological methods to study geometric problems, for example, geometric
group theorists with high dimensional topologists.
The conference is held in honor of the mathematical contributions of Tom
Farrell and Lowell Jones.
On the weekend of January 6-7 there will be two series of introductory
lectures on geometric group theory and controlled topology, targeted at
graduate students and postdocs.
Speakers at the conference include: Alejandro Adem, Igor Belegradek, Ken
Brown, Fred Cohen, Chris Connell, Frank Connolly, Mike Davis, Tsachik
Gelander, Ian Hambleton, Luis Hernandez-Lamoneda, Bruce Hughes, Tadeusz
Januszkiewicz, Lizhen Ji, Qayum Khan, Bruce Kleiner, Chris Leininger, Peter
Linnell, Bob Oliver, Ivonne Ortiz, Erik Pedersen, Frank Quinn, M. S.
Raghunathan, Holger Reich, Xiaochun Rong, Ben Schmidt, Anna Wienhard, Kevin
Wortman, and Guoliang Yu.
The conference is partially funded by a grant from the NSF and by the
Insituto de Mathemticas-UNAM, Unidad Morelia. Travel support for Canadians
is available through PIMS. Some limited funds will be available to help
cover the costs of attending the conference. Graduate students and
postdocs are particularly encouraged to apply.
Further information is available on the web site listed above.

G^3 = Geometric Groups on the Gulf Coast
http://www.math.uiuc.edu/~mineyev/ggg/
The next G3 will be Tuesday - Friday, January 9-12, 2007, in New Orleans,
LA. This will be right after the AMS meeting in New Orleans. Also see the
answers to questions (http://www.ams.org/amsmtgs/2098_faq.html#will) about
having a conference in New Orleans at their website. It pretty much says
that everything will be fine (in case you cave any concerns). If you are
coming for that AMS meeting, just extend your stay. The G3 conference will
start in the morning on Tuesday and finish in the afternoon on Friday. The
best would be to arrive on January 8 and to leave either late in the
evening on January 12, or on January 13.
As usual, we will start with a few educational talks. Those are oriented
toward students, non-experts, general audience. We encourage
students/recent PhD, and also women and minorities to apply by sending a
short description of their research (and mentioning what they are asking
for). We will try to give preference to those who do not give talks at the
AMS meeting, for more participation, so if you do, please mention that.
Those students who share a room will have preference for room
reimbursement.
Do not be affraid to meet people whom you see for the first time. This has
been arranged on purpose.
Conference organizers: Stephen Brick, Craig Jensen, Igor Mineyev.
Let us know if you expect attending the conference. (Acceptable answers:
"yes", "maybe", or "coming with probability ...".) This will help our
planning.
We are looking for people with digital cameras to take pictures during the
conference.
Hotel: We are planning to stay at Doubletree Hotel New Orleans 300 Canal
Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States 70130-1010 Tel:
+1-504-581-1300 Fax: +1-504-522-4100 When making reservations, please
mention "GGG conference", this is the name of our group (!). The group
rate should be $99 plus 12% tax plus maybe something else.
