Nordic Conference on Topology and its Applications (NORDTOP2001)

We shall be holding a conference at the splendid Sophus Lie Centre at Nordfjordeid in the outstandingly beautiful fjordland of western Norway, 7 - 9 August, 2001 (arrival August 6, departure August 10) before next year's Prague conference.

There will also be a "post-Nordfjordeid" meeting on the arctic island of Svalbard immediately afterwards - see details.

Dates:
Scientific Programme: August 7-9, 2001.
Monday August 6: Arrival
Tuesday, 7 August: Talks all day.
Wednesday, 8 August: Talks in the morning, half-day excursion in the afternoon.
Thursday, 9 August: Talks all day, conference dinner in the evening.
Friday, 10 August: Departure.
Location:
The conference will be held at the Sophus Lie Conference Centre near Nordfjordeid, a small town in the scenic fjords of western Norway (roughly half way between Bergen and Trondheim) and the birth-place of Sophus Lie. Since it opened in 1993, the centre, with its up-to-date facilities, has hosted a number of conferences sponsored by the European Commission.
Further information about the Sophus Lie Centre: please contact Mrs Tove Monson at her Centre email address: ffhskule@online.no. All correspondence should be headed with the reference: 'Nordtop2001' to avoid confusion with conferences handled by the Centre.
Organizing commitee:
Peter Collins, Vagn Lundsgaard Hansen, Bjoern Jahren, Heikki Junnila, Dusan Repovs, Stephen Watson

see announcement at Atlas Mathematical Conference Abstracts
Topics:
The conference will be devoted both to general and set-theoretic topology and application, and to algebraic topology.
A number of survey talks will be given by senior topologists. Confirmed speakers include: A.V. Arhangel'skii, Tsugunori Nogura, Gino Tironi, Miroslav Husek, Mahmoud Filali, Jesper Møller, John Rognes.
There will be parallel sessions in which participants can present shorter talks.
Support:
At present we cannot promise any financial support to participants.
Weather:
The weather at Nordfjordeid varies - from rainy and windy to sunny and warm. The temperature is rarely low and can rise to 25 degrees and in general is rather similar to the weather found in the British Isles at this time of year. It is advisable to bring a sweater and a jacket. If you enjoy hiking, bring sturdy shoes.
Registration:
The Registration Fee will be 600 NOK (very approximately 66 US dollars). It will include the cost of all transport for the excursion to the Briksdal Glacier, encompassing some wonderful fjord and mountain scenery en route. The Fee will be payable on arrival (the Centre does not accept credit cards, but there are banks nearby). Accompanying persons are encouraged to join the excursion, for which there will be an appropriate charge.
Fill out the Registration form and return it to norway2001@mail.mathatlas.yorku.ca

Tours:
Concerning pre- and post-conference tours, Norway offers a great variety of interesting sites and beautiful scenery, from the capital Oslo to Nordkapp; and beyond there are the Far North islands of Svalbard (Spitzbergen), where a post-Nordfjordeid workshop will take place: for more see the workshop announcement at Topology Atlas. More information on possible pre- and post-conference tours in Nordfjordeid area can be found at http://www.nordfjord.no/index_eng.html
For accompanying persons, there are many opportunities for excursions in the beautiful and unspoilt surrounding countryside of mountains and water - e.g. hikes and drives in the nearby mountains.
