Algebra in the Stone-Cech compactification: applications to topological groups
by
I. Protasov
Kiev University

If G is a discrete group, its Stone-Cech compactification \betaG has a natural semigroup structure making it a compact right topological semigroup. On one hand, this monster explains some rather exotic phenomena in topological group theory (maximality, irresolvability, extremal disconnectedness). On the other hand, topologizations of G light some hidden features of \betaG.
