\alpha-normality and \beta-normality in products

A necessary condition for the \beta-normality of a product of a \beta-normal space and an infinite compact metric space is given. As a consequence, the product of Rudin's Dowker space with an inifite compact metric space is not \beta-normal. Other examples of products of "nice" spaces are shown not to be \alpha-normal.
