The simultaneous expression profiles of thousands of genes can be obtained from a microarray readout. One of the central questions in microarray experiments had been how to identify the set of genes that are differentially expressed in two or more cell types. The traditional multiple comparison procedures are problematic since the number of comparisons is huge and an effective control of the overall error rate while producing reasonable power at each comparison is a challenge. The talk with review the current state of statistical methodologies for this problem and discuss a new empirical Bayes approach for decision making. A numerical illustration will be provided using an unpublished data set with three types of cancer cells.
