Design of experiments involving field and laboratory phases

Two-phase experiments, first described by McIntyre [Biometrics 39 (1955):324-34], include the important group of experiments that involve a field trial followed by laboratory or sensory analysis. They involve at least two randomizations and so belong to the class of experiments termed multitiered [Brien, Biometrics 39 (1983):51-9]. In this talk principles for the design of experiments that involve field and laboratory phases will be canvassed. In particular the application of recent progress in identifying types of multiple randomizations for multitiered experiments to the randomization of field phase factors to laboratory phase factors will be reported.
