Surface profiles in slowly rotating granular systems

The shape of the upper shear layer, and the rate of mixing within this shear layer, is calculated for a non-cohesive granular material in a slowly rotating cylinder. The analysis involves the derivation and solution of an integral equation. The predicted shape of the shear layer and the corresponding mixing rate is compared to output from DEM simulations, and to experiment.
