Dispersing, Defocusing and Astigmatism
by
Leonid Bunimovich
Georgia Institute of Technology

We will discuss the new examples of chaotic high-dimensional (d > 2) billiards. The corresponding domains ('billiard tables") have focusing components of the boundary. Such examples in two dimensions were known since early 70s. However the new obstacle, well known in the geometrical optics as the astigmatism, comes into play in d > 2. As the prise to astigmatism we allow (to the contrary to d=2) only relatively small focusing components of the boundary.
