Continuous images of compact linearly ordered spaces

Nikiel's conjecture that the continuous imges of compact linearly ordered spaces are precisely those compact spaces which are monotonically normal is a combinatorially complex fact full of naive combinatorics of both the finite and infinite varieties and the right attack on this problem was hard for me to find. I will try to extract some of the ideas which I find most set theoretically interesting for a Boise lecture on the subject.
