On isometry groups of certain CAT(0) spaces
by

Abstract: I build CAT(0) spaces X for which the group of isometries of X is not an inverse limit of Lie groups. The spaces in question are the universal covers of non-positively curved spaces obtained by the gluing procedure in Bridson and Haefliger. Each such space, under certain hypotheses, admits isometries which move things near infinity but are the identity on large subspaces.
