A practical method for finding the hyperbolic constant of a group
by

Coauthors: Derek Holt

We show how to use automata to find the maximum thickness of any geodesic triangle in a hyperbolic group. The group is originally given by generators and relators. The method has been programmed and is successful on a number of groups which are known to be hyperbolic. This work is also related to attempts to give a constructive approach to the topology of the boundary of a hyperbolic group.
