The Hales-Jewett theorem via retractions

Working in the Stone-Cech compactification of an arbitrary semigroup, we prove an abstract version of the Hales-Jewett theorem. We easily obtain the classical Hales-Jewett theorem, van der Waerden's theorem and Gallai's theorem as special cases. We observe that our abstract version of the Hales-Jewett theorem can be derived from the classical one.
