Metacompact nearness spaces and nearness maps are shown to form a bireflective subcategory of NEAR. The metacompact nearness structure generated by the collection of point finite open covers of a symmetric topological space is studied. Under suitable conditions, the completion of such a space is shown to be the smallest metacompact subspace of the Wallman compactification containing the original space.
