The key results herewith are:

1. Semistratifiable spaces are D-spaces.

2. Perfect inverse images and closed images of D-spaces are D-spaces.

3. Paracompact p-spaces are D-spaces.

4. Monotonically normal D-spaces are paracompact.

Several applications demonstrate the usefulness of D-spaces. Several interesting questions remain open.
